About Critical Sleep of NJ

Welcome to Critical Sleep of New Jersey (CSNJ), a premier provider of Sleep Medicine in New Jersey, focused on providing innovative, exceptional and compassionate care to each of our patients.  We are here to help the many people who suffer due to poor sleep, which is quite debilitating, yet often goes undiagnosed and untreated. We also recognize that accessibility is often a major barrier to treatment and we exclusively use a Tele-Medicine(video) platform to optimize accessibility and to minimize valuable, wasted travel and waiting times  of the traditional, office based medical practice. We specialize in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of sleep disorders, including Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Snoring,  Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, Narcolepsy, Circadian Rhythm Disorders,  REM Sleep Behavior Disorder, and Insomnia among others.

All of our patients are seen by Dr. Richard Finkel via a private and HIPPA compliant Tele-medicine(video) platform, who then orders and guides the appropriate diagnostic testing and treatments. Dr. Richard Finkel is a Board Certified Sleep physician, a trusted leading provider, with over 30 years of experience in the field and in treating patients in New Jersey. Dr. Finkel was the Medical Director for the Saint Clare's Center for Sleep Medicine in New Jersey for 10 years prior to starting CSNJ.

CSNJ gladly services both patients and referring physicians. If you are unsure if a sleep test is needed, we will gladly see you or your patients in consultation and fully evaluate them for sleep disorders and then arrange proper testing and treatment.

Snoring is often very disturbing to the sleep and health of the bed partner. Snoring may also indicate the presence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a serious medical condition that is often under-diagnosed, unrecognized and can be especially severe. Sleep apnea causes intermittent breathing pauses during sleep. Many people don’t know they have the condition, and it’s often a bed partner who  first notices that there’s irregular breathing at night. However, diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea are very important, as the condition can have serious consequences for your health.  It is linked with  conditions such as Excessive Tiredness, Motor Vehicle Accidents, Morbid Obesity, Hypertension, Atrial Fibrillation, Congestive Heart Failure, Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke COPD, Asthma, and Diabetes. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, moderate sleep apnea increases your risk of death by 17%. The impact on life expectancy with untreated severe sleep apnea is even more profound: It roughly doubles your risk of death. According to Johns Hopkins medical studies have established that sleep apnea typically decreases life expectancy by several years.

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness is a symptom associated with a variety of conditions. It is not only extremely debilitating but can also contribute to car and workplace accidents, poor job/school performance, depression and cardiovascular disease. Finding and treating the underlying cause is often extremely beneficial.

CSNJ understands that it is often excessively time-consuming and a hassle to get effectively and efficiently evaluated for Snoring, Sleep Apnea and other Sleep disorders including the appropriate evaluations, testing and treatments. A major focus of CSNJ is to arrange for a timely initial medical consultation.  Home Sleep Testing when needed, can be performed within days of the initial consultation with a follow-up visit to discuss the results and plan the appropriate treatment within 1-2 weeks.

CSNJ is very experienced  with ordering CPAP/BIPAP equipment with local suppliers. We also periodically review the CPAP/BiPAP therapeutic and compliance data, which is downloaded wirelessly directly in our office to optimize therapy and we are here to assist you with accommodation to the equipment as needed.

We are also very experienced with referring to expert Dentists for ordering oral appliances for the treatment of snoring and mild-moderate sleep apnea where appropriate.
